Sometimes the machine that’s supposed to clean your clothes is the thing creating the smell.
Moisture and residue can collect around washing machine seals, detergent dispensers, and other areas.
Follow your washing machine manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations and leave the door or lid open when appropriate so the interior can dry between loads.
Don’t Forget the Dishwasher
Dishwashers deal with food particles, grease, and moisture every day.
Check and clean the dishwasher filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Also inspect the door seals and other areas where food residue may collect.
A dishwasher can look perfectly clean from across the kitchen while hiding something considerably less charming inside.
Your Garbage Disposal or Drain May Be the Culprit
Kitchen sinks are another common source of mysterious odors.
Food particles and residue can accumulate in drains, strainers, and garbage disposals.
If the smell seems strongest around the sink, that’s a good place to investigate.
If an odor persists or you suspect a plumbing issue, a plumber may be the better person to call.
Look Under the Kitchen Sink
This little cabinet deserves more attention than it gets.
We tend to fill it with trash bags, cleaning products, and miscellaneous supplies and then rarely inspect the actual cabinet.
Take everything out occasionally.
Look for:
- Dampness
- Leaks
- Water stains
- Wet sponges or cloths
- Old cleaning tools
A tiny leak can remain unnoticed when the cabinet is packed with supplies.
Bathroom Humidity Can Linger
Bathrooms naturally produce a lot of moisture.
Hot showers create humidity that settles on walls, ceilings, towels, rugs, and other surfaces.
Using your bathroom exhaust fan during and after showers can help remove excess moisture.
Also make sure wet towels and bath mats have a chance to dry completely.
Check Your Shower Curtain
When was the last time you looked closely at the bottom of your shower curtain or liner?
Exactly. 😄
Soap residue and constant moisture can create odors even when the rest of the bathroom looks spotless.
Wash or replace shower curtains and liners according to their care instructions.
Soft Surfaces Can Hold Odors
Sometimes the smell isn’t coming from one obvious source.
It’s absorbed into the room itself.
Carpet, rugs, curtains, upholstered furniture, pet beds, throw blankets, and pillows can all hold odors.
Regular vacuuming and laundering washable fabrics can help keep these areas fresher.
Pet Areas Deserve a Sniff Test
We love our pets.
We also become very accustomed to how our pets smell.
Pet beds, blankets, crates, favorite chairs, and feeding areas can develop odors gradually.
Because you’re around them every day, you may stop noticing.
Wash pet bedding regularly according to its care instructions and vacuum the surrounding area thoroughly.
Sometimes It’s the Cleaning Tools
Here’s a fun little betrayal:
The thing making your house smell dirty might be the thing you’re using to clean it.
Mop heads.
Sponges.
Vacuum filters.
Cleaning cloths.
If these stay damp or aren’t cleaned regularly, they can develop their own odors.
Then you use them throughout the house.
Not exactly the fresh finish you were hoping for.
Wash reusable cleaning tools regularly and allow them to dry completely before storing them.
Check Places Where Water Shouldn’t Be
This is the important one.
If a musty smell persists and you can’t identify the source, pay attention to areas where moisture could be entering or accumulating.
Look for things such as:
- Water stains
- Damp drywall
- Leaks beneath sinks
- Moisture around windows
- Damp basement areas
- Plumbing leaks
A recurring musty odor can sometimes indicate a moisture issue that cleaning alone won’t solve.
If you suspect a leak, water damage, or mold problem, it’s important to have the underlying issue properly evaluated rather than simply trying to clean away the smell.
